The Grove Room in the Church Centre draws its name from Miss Edith Grove. Edie, who died at the age of 72 in 1993, had been a member of St. John’s Church all her life. Her legacy to us was twofold. We have the memory of a lady who was passionate and meticulous in her work as a Sacristan, caring for the vestry, altar linen, sanctuary, and chancel cleaning. “Only the very best is good enough for the worship of God” was Edie’s motto, and her unseen ministry enabled that worship.
She walked daily more than a mile from her house to church and was, for years, the only lay person to join the clergy for morning and evening prayer. She faithfully occupied the same pew at Sunday service, ready for the moment to ring the bell at the consecration of the Eucharist.
Her second legacy to St. John’s was the whole of her estate which made it possible, together with the sacrificial giving of the congregation as a whole, to complete the building of the Church Centre.
Thanks be to God.
